State Police: We’ve Studied India, America, Pakistan’s Models – IGP Disu

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, says Nigeria is carefully studying state policing models in countries such as India, the United States and Pakistan as part of efforts to develop a system that suits the nation’s peculiar security needs.

Represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, at a public forum, the IGP disclosed that the police leadership has examined how state policing operates in other federations to identify best practices that can be adapted to Nigeria’s constitutional and security environment.

According to him, while state police have proven effective in some countries, Nigeria must design a framework that reflects its unique social, political and ethnic realities. He stressed that the aim is to strengthen community policing, improve intelligence gathering and enhance rapid response to security challenges.

The police boss noted that the debate on state police has become increasingly important in view of the country’s growing security concerns. He added that extensive consultations with stakeholders are ongoing to ensure that any proposed system promotes accountability, professionalism and respect for human rights.

Egbetokun also emphasized the need for adequate legal safeguards, proper funding and effective oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse of power by state-controlled police formations if the proposal is eventually adopted.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to supporting reforms that will improve public safety, strengthen national security and build a policing system capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians.
