Operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have uncovered more than 20 illegal outlets involved in the production and sale of counterfeit alcoholic beverages at the BBA Trade Fair Complex along the Badagry Expressway in Ojo, Lagos State.
The operation, conducted on Tuesday, October 13, followed credible intelligence and was carried out by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate at Zamfara Plaza within the complex.
According to a statement by NAFDAC, the illegal operations were concealed in makeshift stores used as parking spaces, where suspected counterfeiters engaged in the production and distribution of fake alcoholic beverages.
The agency said its operatives discovered individuals allegedly blending and counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and stockpiling prohibited imported products.
Two suspects were arrested during the raids, while the seized and evacuated products were valued at more than ₦2 billion.
NAFDAC warned that the illegal activities posed a potential threat to public health, particularly as counterfeit, expired and improperly handled alcoholic beverages could expose consumers to serious health risks.
The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious manufacturing, product revalidation or sales activities through its official complaints line: 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).
