The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the killing of Kano-based social media commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, and called for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.

Obi, in a statement posted on his X account on Friday, urged the Kano State Government and security agencies to ensure that all those responsible for the killing are identified, arrested and brought to justice.

Dan Shagamu was reportedly killed at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, on Monday night. The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of outspoken social media commentators and the protection of freedom of expression.

The Kano State Police Command said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the killing. According to the police, the attack occurred at about 11:30pm after the Vigilante Group Commander in Gaida reported that unknown assailants had forcibly entered Dan Shagamu’s residence and attacked him with sharp objects.

Police operatives from the Kumbotso Division responded and rushed the victim to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. The police said the suspects were being interrogated, while forensic procedures were underway to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.

Reacting to the development, Obi said no disagreement, criticism or neighbourhood dispute could justify the taking of a human life. He stressed that Nigerians who express their opinions or hold views different from those of others should not be forced to live in fear.

He urged the Kano State Government and relevant security agencies to pursue the investigation to its logical conclusion, stressing that freedom of expression remains a constitutional right.

Obi condoled with Dan Shagamu’s family, friends, colleagues and followers, and prayed for the repose of his soul.
