Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal and more than $100 billion borrowed by his administration.

Obi’s demand came a day after Tinubu criticised the former Anambra State governor at an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Akwa Ibom State, where he said Obi fled erosion challenges in Anambra while he confronted the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Obi congratulated Tinubu on spending a night in a Nigerian state outside Lagos and Abuja. He also urged the President to visit the remaining states and explain how his administration had utilised the country’s financial resources.

Obi specifically demanded accountability for the subsidy savings, foreign borrowings, increased tax revenues and additional government earnings, which the administration reportedly said had exceeded its targets.

He said Nigerians deserved to know how many people had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been established under the Tinubu administration.

The former governor also questioned the government’s achievements in electricity supply and national security, recalling Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the country’s power challenges.

Obi maintained that Nigerians deserved clear answers on how public funds had been spent and what tangible improvements they had brought to citizens’ lives.

He added that the Nigeria he hoped to build would be anchored on accountability, transparency and measurable results, stressing that public resources must translate into improved living conditions for the people.
