Explosion Kills Five Suspected ISWAP Bombmakers, Medical Officer, Foreign IED Experts in Borno

No fewer than five suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including an alleged medical officer and four improvised explosive device (IED) specialists, have reportedly been killed in a premature explosion while assembling explosives in Borno State.

The incident occurred at Maina Daya village in Marte Local Government Area, located between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram, about 29 kilometres east of Monguno, according to intelligence sources. Security analyst Zagazola Makama also confirmed the development on Tuesday.

Sources identified those killed as Usman Dan Fulani, said to be ISWAP’s medical officer, two foreign Arab IED technicians, and two other bomb-making experts affiliated with the terrorist group. They were reportedly assembling improvised explosive devices when the explosives detonated unexpectedly, killing them instantly.

Security sources believe the terrorists were preparing the explosives for coordinated attacks along critical military supply routes within the Sector 1 operational area of Operation HADIN KAI. The failed operation is seen as an indication that the group was planning fresh attacks against military formations in the region.

Military and security analysts described the loss of the experienced bombmakers as a significant blow to ISWAP’s operational capability, particularly its ability to manufacture and deploy roadside explosive devices. They noted that the incident could temporarily disrupt the group’s IED network and weaken its capacity to stage attacks along the Marte-Monguno corridor.

In response to the development, military sources disclosed that troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been directed to intensify offensive operations, including aggressive patrols, cordon-and-search missions, and precision strikes around Monguno, Marte, and Gamboru Ngala. The objective, the sources said, is to exploit the setback suffered by the terrorists and prevent them from regrouping or rebuilding their bomb-making capability.
