Media Critical to Marine and Blue Economy Reforms, FDI Growth — AkutahThe Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah, MON, has underscored the indispensable role of the media in advancing reforms in Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy sector and driving the Federal Government’s quest for increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
Akutah made the assertion on Wednesday when the leadership of the League of Maritime Editors (LOME), led by its President, Mrs. Remi Itie, paid a courtesy visit to the Council’s headquarters in Lagos.
According to the NSC chief, a vibrant and responsible media remains a strategic partner in promoting transparency, fostering public trust, and ensuring that government policies and initiatives within the maritime sector are effectively communicated to stakeholders and the wider public.

He noted that the success of ongoing reforms in the maritime industry is closely tied to the media’s ability to inform, educate and mobilise public support, particularly as Nigeria seeks to position itself as a preferred destination for foreign investments.
“The media occupies a pivotal place in our national development efforts. Our activities must be seen, understood and appreciated by the public, and we cannot achieve that without the media. Your reportage has continued to shine a light on the progress being made within the maritime industry,” Akutah stated.
The NSC boss commended the League of Maritime Editors for its professionalism, consistency and commitment to quality maritime journalism over the years, describing the association as a dependable ally in the nation’s maritime development agenda.
He assured the visiting editors of the Council’s continued collaboration and support, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to maintaining an open-door policy that encourages constructive engagement with the media.
Akutah further reiterated the Council’s resolve to faithfully implement the Federal Government’s policies aimed at enhancing port efficiency, boosting competitiveness, and creating a more user-friendly business environment capable of attracting greater investments into the sector.
Earlier, President of the League of Maritime Editors, Mrs. Remi Itie, explained that the visit was to solicit the Executive Secretary’s support and participation in the League’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), while also strengthening the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and the maritime media.
She pledged that members of the League would continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism by reporting objectively and supporting initiatives designed to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector as a key driver of economic growth and national prosperity.
